Leithfield School is a delightful, family orientated rural school in
North Canterbury. We have very caring children who look after each
others safety and well being. We have grown to a roll of just over 100.
There are six wonderful classroom teachers as well as office staff and
The school was established in 1864, making it the oldest school in North
Canterbury. We are in the Hurunui District and have a view of the sea,
if you stand in the right place.
Leithfield School works closely with a group of schools in the area
called Kowai. We have set up Lead teachers in Numeracy and Literacy
within this group. We have started a Kapahaka group and run enrichment
programmes each term. Boards of Trustees are also starting to work
together. The schools also participate in a range of sport during the
year. The other schools in this group are Amberley, Broomfield, Waikari,
Waipara, Greta Valley, Sefton and Omihi.
Leithfield School caters for children from New Entrants through to Year
8. We contribute to Rangiora High School which is about 20 km from

Leithfield Beach and Village urban areas as well as the surrounding
rural farming area including some lifestyle blocks. There is a wide
socio-economic range in the community – ranging from families with young
children to retired persons who have lived in the district all their

trips. There is a regular liaison with the local Playcentre and the
children at the Playcentre make visits to the school each term.
