Te manu e kai ana i te matauranga nona te ao.
The bird who eats of knowledge the world is his.

Leithfield School is a delightful, family orientated rural school in North Canterbury. We have very caring children who look after each others safety and well being. We have grown to a roll of just over 100. There are six wonderful classroom teachers as well as office staff and teacher aides.

The school was established in 1864, making it the oldest school in North Canterbury. We are in the Hurunui District and have a view of the sea, if you stand in the right place.

Leithfield School works closely with a group of schools in the area called Kowai. We have set up Lead teachers in Numeracy and Literacy within this group. We have started a Kapahaka group and run enrichment programmes each term. Boards of Trustees are also starting to work together. The schools also participate in a range of sport during the year. The other schools in this group are Amberley, Broomfield, Waikari, Waipara, Greta Valley, Sefton and Omihi.

Leithfield School caters for children from New Entrants through to Year 8. We contribute to Rangiora High School which is about 20 km from Leithfield.

The school derives its pupils from the Leithfield Beach and Village urban areas as well as the surrounding rural farming area including some lifestyle blocks. There is a wide socio-economic range in the community – ranging from families with young children to retired persons who have lived in the district all their lives.

Parents are involved with assistance in classroom and sports programmes, transporting children, camps and class trips. There is a regular liaison with the local Playcentre and the children at the Playcentre make visits to the school each term.
